Why finishing networking courses doesn't make you hireable, and what actually does.

You know the OSI model. You can subnet in your head. You've configured VLANs in Packet Tracer. Yet somehow, you're still not getting callbacks.

There's a reason for this — and it's not that you didn't study hard enough.

The Disconnect Between Training and Hiring

Networking training has a fundamental problem: it's designed around certification exams, not job requirements. These are different things.

Certifications are standardized tests that can be administered at scale. Jobs are messy, contextual, and involve problems that can't be multiple-choiced.

The Business Model Problem

Training institutes optimize for certification pass rates because that's what they can market. Companies optimize for hiring people who can solve problems. These incentives don't align.

Automation Capability

Even basic Python or Ansible proficiency. Can you automate config backups, health checks, or reporting? This is now baseline.

Can you create network diagrams, write runbooks, document changes? This is surprisingly rare and highly valued.

Understanding of ACLs, firewall basics, secure configurations. Security isn't separate from networking anymore.

Cloud Networking Basics

VPCs, VPNs, cloud connectivity. Even traditional roles now touch cloud at some point.

The Practical Test

Ask any training program: "What will I be able to build or demonstrate after completing this that I can show employers?" If the answer is only "You'll have a certification," keep looking.

This critique doesn't apply if...

  • You only need the certification for visa/compliance purposes
  • Your employer is paying specifically for certification prep
  • You're using the certification as a learning framework, then adding practical work
  • You already have production experience and just need the credential

The mismatch between training and hiring isn't going away. But you can bridge it yourself by focusing on skills companies actually need, not just what certifications test.
